Did you know what you could earn money by simply taking a photo of your shopping receipts? It's a super quick and easy way of making a bit of extra cash, and earn Amazon gift cards. In this post, I'm going to cover the five best receipt scanning apps in the UK. I have personally used all of these and still regularly do so. Please note that because of funding and the impact of Covid-19 on small businesses some of these are not currently taking new members or running a referral scheme however you can pin this post to come back to it later in the year.

ZipZero

ZipZero allows you to take photos of your receipts and turn them into cash. At the moment ZipZero is unable to take on new members due to trying to raise funding which has been halted by Covid-19 and has reduced the percentage earned from 1% of the total value to 0.5%. That being said, I am confident that ZipZero will secure its funding and increase the earning rate once things are back to normal as they were well-loved before the pandemic hit.

You can scan just about any receipt into ZipZero which makes it stand out from some of the other competitors who only allow receipts from food shops. Rather than giving out cash or vouchers, ZipZero lets you use the money earned on bills such as Council Tax, Water, Electric, etc..

Shoppix

Shoppix is my personal best receipt scanning apps and that's because of some of the additional in-app functions. Shoppix gives you the opportunity to increase your earnings by answering quick (usually less than 10 minutes) surveys and throws out the occasional fun quiz and jokes that users can send in for extra tokens. You can also earn 'scratch cards' which give you the chance to make even more on the app!

There are weekly prize draws to win up to 10,000 tokens (which would work out as at least £15) and you can redeem your tokens as Amazon.co.uk, iTunes, and Love2Shop vouchers, or opt for payment on PayPal.

Storewards

Storewards came once ReceiptHog closed down. Much like Shoppix, you can use the app to scan your receipts and answer surveys (although I'm not sure if I've ever seen any on there..) but unlike the others, you can connect your Amazon account and your Email to get an additional 1,000 coins monthly.

Each receipt will make you 600 coins and you can redeem from as little as £2 (20,000 coins) to £10 (100,000 coins). You can redeem your coins as either Amazon.co.uk vouchers or PayPal credit. It may seem like a lot of coins but actually, it does add up pretty fast due to bonuses from 'leveling up'.

HuYu

A little bit simpler than the previous apps mentioned, HuYu only lets you scan receipts from grocery stores and each receipt will get you 5 points. Once you reach 500 points you can redeem a £5 Amazon.co.uk voucher. It can take a little longer than some of the other apps to redeem your voucher however you can also answer surveys for 15 coins, and before the pandemic they ran a referral scheme, earning you 50 points per friend. Hopefully, this is re-started later in the year!

SnapMyEats

I'll admit, I have not used this app as much as I have the others. I've found its user face quite outdated and sometimes hard to use however I do know of people within the money-saving community who use it successfully to make money. Is it the best receipt scanning app? No, but it is one to add to your arsenal.

As the name suggests you can only scan receipts from food and drink purchases, including things like a snack or coffee on the go, fast food, restaurant meals, or even just buying a chocolate bar. Earn a £1 for every 5 receipts you submit per month and redeem your rewards once your balance reaches £10. You can convert your reward into a gift voucher. Currently, vouchers include Amazon, Cost, Greene King, Tesco, Virgin, and Google Play.

Which is the best receipt scanning app?

If you're serious about making some easy extra cash, or earning vouchers towards birthdays and holidays throughout the year, scanning your receipts can be a quick and easy way to aid towards this. I have all the apps mentioned downloaded and saved into a folder. After the weekly food shop, I sit down and go through the apps one by one scanning the receipt. I also often steal my partner's receipts too… But if I had to pick a favourite, Shoppix would win hands down.

Shoppix is super user-friendly, allows you to redeem rewards from various sources, and really shows you the community aspect of the app with their quizzes and competitions.
